This is my sweetest girl, Felicity. She’s more chihuahua than poodle, but that’s her mix. She’s had trouble breathing since she was about 2 years old, snorting and reverse wheezing and sneezing. She’s 8 now and two days ago, her breathing became so bad I feared she would die. I sat down to figure her case out and help her to feel better. Animals are not all that different from humans and when you understand your own body, it helps you to understand those you love. At first, I thought she had a collapsed trachea and it was preventing her from getting adequate air. But as I really observed her, she didn’t make noise when she panted, only when using her nose. This told me it wasn’t likely to be her trachea. I researched more and even snorted through my own nose a few times to feel in my body where it happens. I learned that her breed is known to have issues with the soft palate. Something told me that if she had an acute swelling of that tissue, inflammation was a factor. The cause was not known, but in humans, inflammation is caused by acids, injury, or pathogens. I decided to alkalize her body a bit by shifting her diet and incorporate a turmeric paste with CBD oil for inflammation and pathogen/infection control. So, I mixed together pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and applesauce in a bowl and gave her 1/4 cup mixed with 1/8 cup green juice and 1/4 scoop of collagen with probiotics and also the 1/4 tsp. turmeric paste mixture. Immediately following the fresh food, I give her 1/8 cup dry kibble that is grain free. I do this morning and evening. A few hours after eating, and because fresh food digests faster, I split a banana between her and my other dog. They also get a chew that is just for boredom, we don’t have a place to run and play. Today, 2 days after I thought I was losing her, Felicity is having very little issue breathing. Currently, as I’m writing this, she is sleeping on her side quietly for the first time in I don’t know how long. Everything I read online was telling me that it’s a problem that needs surgery or will never get better, that I need to prepare to lose my sweet bestie because there’s no hope. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

I think that I am the exception and that somehow hustling for my worth is going to get me somewhere that matters. But the Lord kindly draws me in. God is a gentleman and patiently waits for me to come to him. In his presence, I am free to admit I haven’t got all the answers and I can’t get it right on my own. He already knows that and loves me anyways.⁣ ⁣ He calls me worthy, but not for the reasons the world might. My list of accomplishments are meaningless to him. He loves me because he created me. An appreciative, shame-free & respectful way to honor and celebrate the well being of our elders, especially those who are People of Color, LGBTQIA+ and of diverse faiths in Indiana. Full transparency: I am trying to address the social healing gap. Some of our elders who come to me for therapy are on fixed incomes and need their loving community to help them pay for consistent access to professional self-care options. They don’t want to switch to a lower cost therapist. I have tried. Here’s the Social Healing Gap: A person who was 19 when MLK was killed is now 71. A person who was 20 at the Stone Wall Riot that led to what we now call PRIDE is now 70. It was illegal for Indigenous people to practice their faiths. It was unlawful for women to be on juries. And unless they were very lucky, there was no access to queer, trans, PoC, multi-faith therapists when they needed support. Now we have regular self care events & free mental heath Instagram accounts. They did not. The elder trauma (and potential for incredible healing) our community members over 50 years old have, is powerful & incredible. Let’s make sure the folks who helped fight for our rights, created our music and gave us home-cooking, also get to invest in healthy relationships with themselves. They are worthy of healing. Brown Being out of balance emotionally usually involves either not allowing yourself to experience your feelings as they evolve by avoiding or suppressing them, or being so attached to and identified with them that your feelings are all-consuming. Emotional balance occurs when we allow ourselves to feel whatever comes up, without stifling or being overwhelmed by it, and learn to accept our feelings without judgment. LABELLING EMOTIONS IS CALMING Research has found that putting your feelings into words can calm you down. Stating out loud, or writing down, what you are feeling – a process that psychologists call “affect labelling” – seems to down-regulate emotions, diminishing their intensity. A recent study has explored this phenomenon outside of the lab, analysing over a billion tweets to find examples of when people used a tweet to put their emotional state into words. From analysing the emotional language used in preceding and subsequent tweets, Rui Fan and his colleagues were able to see how the act of affect labelling influenced the course of an emotional state. “We found that, for a majority of individuals, emotional intensity decreased rapidly after their explicit expression in an ‘I feel’ statement,” the researchers write in their paper in Nature Human Behaviour. HUMOUR & THE BRAIN As researchers have started to look more closely at humour and its effects, they’ve discovered that genuine laughter stimulates multiple areas of the brain, especially the frontal lobe. Once this is triggered, an electrical wave is released through the cerebral cortex. From there, the rest of our body responds with surprise, delight and laughter. The results can be anything from a mild chuckle to an all-out belly laugh. According to research by Marci at Harvard Medical School, laughter and humour are, among other things, powerful agents in combating mood disorders. Laughter can trigger the brain’s emotional reward center, delivering a significant dose of feel-good dopamine and mood-lifting serotonin. It can even increase the release of endorphins, the pain-relieving chemicals our brain releases in response to such things as exercise, food and sex.
